Tecumseh ends crossing guard service at one location, defers decision on others

After June, the Town of Tecumseh will no longer offer its crossing guard program near D.M. Eagle Public School.

The school is closing at the end of this school year, and the town will implement other pedestrian crossover methods.

Town councillors deferred a decision on locations near four other elementary schools on Monday night.

Over the next few years, the town will assess service at St. Thomas Street at Michael Drive, Tecumseh Road and Arlington Boulevard, Lesperance Road and St. Thomas, Lacasse and Clapp Street, and Lacasse at St. Thomas Street.

Councillors will get a report outlining the findings of those reviews, and consultation with school officials will go to town councillors before any decisions are made to end service at those intersections.

The town employs seven full-time and four alternate crossing guards, but recruiting new ones has proven difficult because of the limited number of hours offered each day.
