Kingsville to debate design of new Cottam Community Centre

Town councillors in Kingsville have two options in front of them for the design of a new community centre in Cottam.

Both designs include a kitchen, library, multi-purpose meeting room, washrooms, and storage. The two designs also include an outdoor covered pavilion.

What's up for debate is whether to go with an exterior design with a more traditional brick appearance or something more modern with large windows.

The public overwhelmingly supported keeping the building in Ridgeview Park, where it will be close to sports fields and the parking lot.

The only drawback is the building will be set back from the road and could be vulnerable to vandalism and graffiti.

A report to councillors for Monday night's meeting recommends a mixture of both: a traditional design with large windows.

The new centre will replace existing facilities in Cottam. A recent review of municipal facilities suggested fixing the Ridgeview Park Community Centre and Cottam Public Library will be costly. In response to a report last year, councillors decided to demolish both buildings and build something new.

The town has already set aside over $2.8-million in this year's budget for the project.
