Union presents proposal to save University Players

The union representing employees of the University Players is hopeful the University of Windsor will reconsider.

On June 18, the University of Windsor announced the closure of the School of Dramatic Arts production unit, affecting six positions.

Last week, CUPE Local 1393 met with University of Windsor officials to present possible alternatives.

"We're hopeful that there is a path forward. However, the language is non-binding. It's only an opportunity for us to present those alternatives, and it's up to the university now to decide how they would like to proceed," said Kristen Siapas, the acting president of CUPE Local 1393.

The closure of University Players, along with cuts to the Entrepreneurship, Practice, and Innovation Centre, would save the university $5.6 million in its annual operating budget.

The university has until August 14 to respond to the union's proposal.
