The Town of Tecumseh will be expanding infrastructure to support the development of over 4,000 new homes thanks to a provincial grant.
The town received over $15.1 million through the Housing Enabling Water Systems Fund to support development in the Tecumseh Hamlet Secondary Plan Area.
"The provincial goals of building homes are achieved by working with the Town of Tecumseh to install this infrastructure, open up the lands for residential development exactly where the demand exists for residential development," said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie.
The plan includes installing 1.8 kilometres of trunk water main and 1.7 kilometres of sanitary sewer in the area bounded by County Road 22, Banwell Road, and County Road 42. These improvements will service approximately 4,059 homes, expanding the town's overall housing units by 41 percent.
"This project is in the neighbourhood of about $22 million. For a community Tecumseh's size that is a huge amount to ask for a small community to bring forward in order for us to be able to sustain the housing needs," said Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara.
A construction tender for the initial project will go out this month.
McNamara said developers have already expressed interest in starting developments.
"We've laid out the plan, we invited the community to participate and the end result is that now you've got the requirement in dollars to get the infrastructure in the ground for them to come forward now," said McNamara.
