Windsor police have reported a trending increase in crimes against people so far in 2024.
Crime statistics for August, and 2024 to date, were released on Thursday evening for Windsor and Amherstburg. They showed that while property crimes were relatively stable, there was an increase in personal crimes being reported.
Compared to August 2023, personal crime, including murder, sexual assault, assault, robbery, and harassment; rose by 29.6 per cent, with police taking 299 reports.
In 2024 to date, a total of 2,150 crimes against people were reported, a 15 per cent rise from the first eight months of 2023.
Property crimes, which include theft, arson, fraud, and mischief, went down 1.3 per cent in August compared to 2023, with 1,033 reports taken.
For year-to-date, crimes against people went up slightly, by 1.4 per cent, with 7,856 incidents between January and August 2024.
For Criminal Code violations not falling under those two categories, Windsor police said there was a 0.6 per cent decline for August, compared to last year. For 2024 to date, the drop was up 0.7 per cent.
Child pornography, non-violent weapons offences, betting and gaming offences, and failure to comply with justice orders, are included in the latter category.
Going ward by ward in August, for Windsor only, Ward 3 had the highest rates of both personal and property crime. Ward 1 had the lowest of both.
