Health Unit to hand out K.I. pills to LaSalle residents

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit says LaSalle residents who previously got K.I. or Potassium Iodide pills can pick up new ones in early October.

The pills are nearing expiry, and the health unit will hand out new packages on October 2 at the LaSalle Civic Centre between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Once residents have their new pills, they can dispose of the old ones by dropping them off at a pharmacy or tossing them in the garbage.

The pills block the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine, which may be released during a nuclear incident. They protect against thyroid cancer.

LaSalle is within the secondary zone around Ohio's Enrico Fermi 2 Nuclear Generating Station.

"While the level of risk has not changed at Fermi 2, the regulatory framework for Canadian nuclear installations has. All residents living within the primary zone of a nuclear installation must have K.I. pills in their homes in the event of an incident.

Fermi 2 is not regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, but the Town of LaSalle and the health unit are taking the extra precaution of supplying those in the secondary zone with the pills.

Earlier this summer, the health unit distributed K.I. pills to residents in the primary zone in Amherstburg.

Residents are urged not to take the pills unless the Medical Officer of Health instructs them to.
