The federal government is investing in upgrading ship fueling infrastructure in Windsor to help establish a greener shipping corridor along the Great Lakes.
Sterling Fuels is upgrading its fueling tanks and pumps to accommodate biofuels in Windsor and Hamilton.
"Sterling will add infrastructure to receive biofuels by rail into existing storage tanks," said Peter Kelly, Sterling Fuels president. "This new infrastructure, along with utilizing existing capabilities, will allow Sterling to customize various fuel blends specific to the requirements of each vessel."
The $10 million project will be completed over the next two years.
The Ministry of Transportation is providing $4.9 million toward the project through the Green Shipping Corridor Program.
"Our ports are essential gateways to Canada's economy. These innovative projects will help us protect our planet, build a greener economy for Canadians, reduce emissions, and keep our communities connected," said federal Minister of Transport Anita Anand.
Anand announced the funding in Windsor Tuesday morning. It was part of $25 million for four projects throughout Ontario.
