Former GECDSB student trustee named to vacant board spot

The English-language public school board serving Windsor-Essex has turned to a former student to fill a spot on its Board of Trustees.

The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) announced this week that it has selected former student trustee Malek Makawi to fill the vacant seat for Windsor Wards 3, 4, and 10.

That post has been vacant since Sarah Cipkar's resignation.

Makawi was chosen from ten candidates who applied for the position and underwent a public interview process.

"I look forward to working with and earning the trust of trustees, staff, and the community to support our diverse student population," said Makawi, 20.

Makawi, who now studies engineering at the University of Windsor, was a student trustee during the 2021-2022 school year. He is a graduate of Vincent Massey Secondary School in Windsor.

"Malek’s passion for student achievement and equity reflects the GECDSB’s commitment to creating confident learners, fostering supportive environments, and building trusting relationships," said GECDSB Director of Education Vicki Houston. "His fresh perspective and leadership experience will be instrumental as we continue to honour our diversity and engage our communities in meaningful ways."

Makawi will represent Windsor Wards 3, 4, and 10 for the remainder of Cipkar's term, which expires in October 2026 with the next municipal election.
