The bitter cold has prompted the Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope to expand its warming centre services.
It'll be open to those experiencing homelessness 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"Vulnerable members of our community are at significant risk in these extreme conditions," said Executive Director Jason Linton. "This expanded service provides vital warmth, shelter, and support to those who need it most during this critical time."
Hot meals, blankets, and other necessities are available to those seeking refuge from the cold.
The Salvation Army hopes the community will support the expansion by donating supplies like hats, mittens, and hygiene kits. Donors can drop those off at 355 Church Street.
The service will return to its regular hours, from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., on January 30.
The Downtown Mission also hopes the public will support its services. It says if just 1,000 people across the region donate $100 each, it will help those without a place to stay with hot meals, a bed, and other services.
It said the need is urgent.
"When you pass someone on the street bundled in layers, shivering, and vulnerable, it's impossible to ignore their humanity. Homelessness is not a choice. It's a crisis," said the Executive Director at the Downtown Mission Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin. "The Downtown Mission stands as their lifeline, providing food, shelter, and hope with the compassion they so desperately need."
The Downtown Mission will host its biggest annual fundraiser, The Coldest Night of the Year, on February 22.
