Salvation Army opens doors to couples and pets at emergency shelter

The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope is expanding its emergency shelter and support services to include couples and pets.

Previously, the shelter was only open to men, but demand for shelter space has increased, and the Salvation Army wants to remove barriers for those seeking refuge from the cold.

Many shelters separate people based on gender, but the Windsor Centre of Hope will offer private, shared spaces so couples can remain together.

"Recognizing the deep bond between individuals and their pets, the shelter will now offer pet-friendly spaces, allowing people to stay with their animals during difficult times," read a release.

The shelter recently added another 20 spots for men.

"The Salvation Army believes that everyone deserves a safe place to call home," said Executive Director Jason Linton. "This temporary expansion reflects our commitment to providing compassionate care for all individuals in need, ensuring no one has to face homelessness or crisis alone and that couples can stay together."

The expansion in services will last until the end of March.
