Share the Spirit of Ramadan food drive celebrates 20 years

The Muslim Community of Windsor returns to Devonshire Mall on Sunday for its 20th annual Share the Spirit of Ramadan food drive.

Spokesperson Sousan Khaled says the food drive has changed significantly over the years since it started in 2006.

"We used to send a box home to fill with donations, then we moved to bags. During COVID, we used gift cards," she said.

The food drive will be in front of the Hudson's Bay store in the mall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Khaled said the hope is to collect at least $1,000 for each of the 17 food banks supported by the event. Those include the Salvation Army, Drouillard Place, the Children's Aid Society of Windsor and Essex County, and the Downtown Mission.

She encourages families to bring their children. The festivities include activities, including a clown.

Donations are also accepted online.
