Local Liberal Party candidates kicked off their campaign Monday with Detroit as a backdrop.
Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore candidate Irek Kusmierczyk and Essex candidate Chris Sutton say they expect tariffs to be the number one issue this campaign cycle.
"The frontline is here in Windsor-Essex," Kusmierczyk said. "Ninety per cent of what we manufacture, 90 per cent of what we grow gets exported to the U.S. and so we need to stand united, as Canadians, as one country and fight these tariffs."
Sutton has been a construction millwright in the community for 30 years. He said he knows what workers need and will fight to protect them during this trade war.
"We need somebody that understands the industries around here. We need somebody that's willing to stand up and speak for the communities here and create that strong voice," said Sutton.
The federal election is April 28, 2025.
Also running in Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore are Mark McKenzie for the Conservative Party of Canada, Alex Ilijoski for the NDP, Nick Babic of the People's Party of Canada, and Beth St. Denis of the Christian Heritage Party.
In Essex, Lori Wightman is running for the NDP, Jason Henry is running for the People's Party of Canada, and Chris Lewis is seeking re-election for the Conservative Party.
The Liberal Party has not yet announced a candidate for Windsor-West.
