A new manufacturing plant is under construction near the Windsor airport to support the electric vehicle supply chain.
Minth Group is building a $300-million facility to manufacture battery casings and exterior trim. Once phase one of the project is complete, it will employ nearly 1,100 people.
"We're making battery cases so the main body structure of parts that encloses the battery modules in the electric vehicles as well as other structural parts that goes along with battery cases," said William Chin, Chief Strategy Officer for Minth.
Construction of the building is expected to be complete by September of this year. Mass production is expected to begin in late 2026.
Minth is already considering expansion with two future phases of construction.
Chin said while there was apprehension surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff announcement, the company is confident in its decision to build in Windsor.
"Even though there were many doubts we still continued on with the project and with the announcement yesterday from the White House, USMCA auto parts are exempt from further tariffs. We are very happy, very relieved," said Chin.
The company received a $40 million loan from the Government of Ontario through the Invest Ontario Fund. It will also receive some incentives through the city's Community Improvement Plan.
"Minth Group’s decision to expand its operations in Windsor is a testament to our city's growing leadership in the automotive and automobility sector. This new facility, coupled with significant job creation and investment, will not only bolster our local economy but also solidify Windsor's position as a hub for next-generation vehicle innovation," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
