Disc golf aficionados will soon have another option to play in Windsor-Essex.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) Board of Directors has approved a plan to create a new disc golf course in the Holiday Beach area of Amherstburg.
According to the report presented to the board, ERCA was approached by members of the Windsor Essex Disc Golf Club about a new course in the area. Designs for a course have been submitted and a sponsor has signed on to cover the estimated cost of $14,000.
The course will feature 12 permanent holes, but six additional holes will be purchased for events requiring a complete 18-hole layout.
"The addition of a Disc Golf course within the day use area of the park is consistent with management planning for Holiday Beach Conservation Area and would be considered a compatible amenity to past uses in this area," read the report submitted to ERCA. "The proposed Disc Golf area was used by occasional day-use visitors, primarily on weekends. If Disc Golf is included as a new amenity in the park, visitors would be directed with newly installed signage to specific parking areas. Further, ERCA staff would post appropriate signage that allows for picnicking, walking and Disc Golf to be used together, similar to the Lakewood Park model."
An 18-hole public course is already available at Lakewood Park in Tecumseh, a six-hole course at Beaudoin Park in Amherstburg, and a private course in Lakeshore at Patillo Orchards.
The concept of disc golf is similar to regular golf, with frisbees being used instead of clubs and a ball. Players toss a frisbee toward metal baskets, which act as the "holes".
Work will begin on the course shortly with a projected opening date of later this spring.
