The City of Windsor starts construction on a new cricket field behind the Children's Safety Village.
The open field in Derwent Park will be closed starting Monday until late July so crews can build the cricket field, a concrete cricket pitch with artificial turf, wooden benches for spectators, benches for players, an irrigation system, and a small utility shed.
The rest of Derwent Park, including the trail, will stay open during construction.
The first phase of the project will cost $1-million, but the entire project was estimated to cost $7.5-million when the city announced it last July.
The next phases include a path around the cricket field, lighting, batting/practice cages, and a washroom with two dressing rooms.
At the time of the announcement, Eniyavan Subramanian of the Windsor Essex Cricket League said the sport was expanding at a fast pace in Windsor.
"The Windsor Essex Cricket League started in 2018 with just six clubs," he said. "In 2024, close to 30 clubs participate in the league."
