SIU invokes mandate after Kingsville traffic stop

The police watchdog in the province invoked its mandate after a traffic stop in Kingsville led to injury.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that an officer conducted a traffic stop in a parking lot in the area of Remark Drive and Main Street East, at around 1:40 a.m. Thursday.

"During the traffic stop, an incident occurred resulting in the driver sustaining an injury. Both the officer and the driver were assessed by Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Service (EMS) at the scene," said Constable Chris Ciliska in a news release.

The 26-year-old driver was apprehended and taken to the hospital to be treated for a serious injury.

The Special Investigations Unit was notified and took over the investigation.

No other details have been released at this time.
