Inquest into death of Southwest Detention Centre inmate starts next week

The inquest into the overdose death of an inmate at the Southwest Detention Centre in Windsor starts next Monday.

Joseph Gratton died on October 30, 2019, one of five men to overdose at the detention centre over 16 days.

Gratton was 31.

The inquest, conducted by video conference, is expected to last five days and hear from five witnesses.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Gratton's death and provide recommendations to prevent future deaths.

The mandatory inquest will start at 9:30 a.m. Doctor Richard Wells will be the presiding officer and Julian Roy will be the inquest counsel.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
