Housing sales barely budge in May

The Windsor Essex County Real Estate Association reported a busy May for listing properties for sale but not so much for closing the deal.

Sales in May dipped 1.01 per cent last month. A total of 491 homes changed hands compared to 496 in May 2024.

Sales are down 8.07 per cent so far this year.

Market activity rose 9.89 per cent last month from a year ago and is up 15.72 per cent so far this year.

Another 1,378 properties went on the market in May.

The average price of a home fell 2.7 per cent from $569,583 to $569,394.

Meanwhile, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation released housing starts figures on Monday morning, showing a 45 per cent drop in construction in May. Ground broke on 33 single-detached and 31 multi-unit homes. Housing starts in the region are down 65 per cent from January to May 31 compared to the same period last year.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
