Man charged following armed standoff in west Windsor

A 36-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a standoff Monday night near the University of Windsor.

Windsor police responded to a home on Rankin Avenue off University Avenue West at about 10 p.m., on a report of an assault. Someone escaped the home and told officers they had been forcibly confined, assaulted, and threatened. They were treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect soon barricaded himself inside the house with knives and an axe, and police set up a perimeter. Following about an hour of communication with police, the suspect surrendered peacefully.

He has been charged with forcible confinement, assault, assault by choking, and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

The charges have not been proven in court.
