Warnings posted at two local beaches, swimming not recommended

Except for Sandpoint Beach in Windsor, all public beaches in the region are open this weekend, although warnings are posted at two.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit tests the water every Wednesday for e.coli bacteria. This week, the e.coli count at Colchester Beach was 863 ppm, and 564 ppm at Seacliff Beach.

The beaches are open, but swimming is not recommended.

E.coli bacteria can cause eye and skin irritation, although in more severe cases, it can lead to liver failure.

Cedar Beach, Cedar Island Beach, Holiday Beach, Lakeshore Lakeview Park, West Beach, and Point Pelee North West Beach are open.

The City of Windsor shut down Sandpoint Beach indefinitely earlier this year after the drowning death of a 15-year-old boy. There have been nine drowning deaths at the beach since 1980.
