West Nile Virus detected in Windsor-Essex

The first sign of the West Nile Virus has been discovered in the region.

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has identified the first positive mosquito pool this year.

There have been no human cases of the virus identified in Windsor-Essex so far in 2025.

“Windsor and Essex County residents should continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes. This is an important reminder for everyone to remove standing water around our homes and workplaces to prevent mosquito breeding and protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites,” said Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, Medical Officer of Health, Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

To protect against contracting the virus, the health unit recommends using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors, and limiting time outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
