The new acute care hospital on County Road 42 will be named the Fancsy Family Hospital after a $40 million donation.
The donation came from the estate of John Thomas Fancsy, who passed away in 2024. It is the single largest donation received in the hospital's history.
"It's breathtaking, when we heard about it, and even to this day, I still get goose pimples, hair standing on end, thinking about the significance of this gift," said David Musyj, former president of Windsor Regional Hospital and advisor to the project.
The Fancsy family played a vital role in the region's automotive industry. John and his brother Stephen also founded Viewpoint Estate Winery in Harrow.
"If you knew John, you knew he was a large person with a big heart. How fitting is it that his legacy is every bit as big as he was," said Terry Fancsy, John's sister.
The funds will be used to outfit the new hospital with all state-of-the-art equipment.
Construction on the new facility is expected to start early next year and could take five to seven years to complete.
When the new hospital was first contemplated, it was estimated that the facility would cost $2 billion. The number has not been updated, but it is expected to cost significantly more.
