Canoe and kayak enthusiasts have an easier way to access the water in Belle River after the Municipality of Lakeshore installed a new accessible dock at Lakeview Park West Beach.
The new launch is a floating dock with two platforms designed to support users of all abilities in safely accessing canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.
“This launch is more than just an infrastructure project, it’s an investment in inclusion and accessibility,” said Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey. “It ensures that residents and visitors, regardless of ability, can enjoy our incredible waterfront and explore the natural beauty of the Belle River.”
Resident and member of the Windsor and Essex County Canoe Club John Enright has been advocating for amenities like this for nearly a decade.
"I'm very thrilled, very excited. This is such a positive experience for both myself, the community, my fellow paddlers, this is just really awesome," said Enright. "This facility is really going to change how this river and lake get used. It really is going to give people who maybe just need a little confidence boost to launch, the perfect spot."
The floating launch will stay in the water between late March and early December, depending on the weather.
The total cost of the project was $100,000, that includes the floating dock as well as a ramp, breakwall improvements and signage.
