Diageo announces closure of Amherstburg plant

Workers arriving for work at the Diageo plant in Amherstburg got some difficult news on Thursday morning. The plant will close in February.

"We appreciate our dedicated Amherstburg employees for their contributions to Diageo and the Crown Royal brand," said Diageo's President of North American Supply, Marsha McIntosh. "This was a difficult decision, but one that is crucial to improving the efficiency and resiliency of our supply chain network."

There's no word yet on how many jobs will be lost when the plant, which bottles Crown Royal products, closes.

"All Crown Royal will be mashed, distilled, and aged at our Canadian facilities, just as it has been for nearly a century," McIntosh continued.

Diageo will maintain the rest of its footprint in Canada, including its headquarters in the Greater Toronto Area, and other bottling and distillation facilities in Gimli, Manitoba, and Valleyfield, Quebec.

Diageo employs more than 3,000 people in Ontario and over 9,700 across Canada.
