More officers will be hired by the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) to help secure border crossings in Windsor.
They are part of 1,000 new recruits being hired across the country.
Deputy Government House Leader MP Arielle Kayabaga made the announcement while touring the CBSA operation at the Ambassador Bridge.
The officers will be dedicated to intelligence and investigation to help crack down on the movement of stolen goods and illegal guns and drugs.
"They're going to our dedicated enforcement teams to work in those areas such as the postal, courier environment, the rail environment and the marine environment here in Windsor," said CBSA Acting Director Justin Morgan.
Morgan indicated these teams are important if the government wants to crack down on gun trafficking and the flow of illegal drugs.
"Items are often sent across in the courier stream, the biggest one we see is firearms," said Morgan. "What ends up happening for CBSA is that we may end up intercepting a firearm part, it's not the actual firearm itself but individuals ship parts separately, get it across the border and then assemble it and that's a firearm that's on the streets."
As part of the funding announcement, the federal government also announced an increase to the CBSA recruit stipend to help attract the next generation of border officers.
