More cameras could be coming to downtown Windsor

If you're in downtown Windsor, smile. You may be on camera.

Windsor city council will be asked on Monday to approve a contract with Security ONE Alarm Systems to install more cameras downtown.

Security ONE is a Windsor-based business.

Four cameras were installed as part of a pilot project launched in August 2023. Each camera was marked with a green blinking beacon so the public could see where they were.

Building on the success of the pilot project, councillors will be asked to approve a new public-private partnership with businesses in the downtown core to support the installation of more cameras.

Businesses interested in hosting a camera will have to formally apply to the city. Once their applications are approved, Security ONE will install the cameras.

The program is being called Operation Greenlight.

The city will directly reimburse Security ONE for the installation of the cameras at a cost of up to $5,000 each.

The city plans to make $450,000 available to the program. The funding will come from the Community Safety and Downtown Revitalization project budget.
