Stolen dog returned to owner

Windsor police have arrested a suspect and recovered a stolen dog in downtown Windsor.

Officers were called to an apartment building on University Avenue near McDougall Avenue around 11 a.m Tuesday.

A complainant told police the dog left the apartment after an unknown man knocked on her door. Surveillance footage showed a man picking up the dog and leaving the property.

Around 3 p.m. police found the suspect in the same area and he was arrested after a brief chase.

The dog was found behind a nearby building inside a black reusable grocery bag secured with a knot. Police say the bag was covered with sticks to stop the dog from escaping.

A 36-year-old was charged with willfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering, or injury to an animal, theft under $5,000, and possession of stolen property.

The dog has been reunited with its owner and did not sustain any injuries.
