The City of Windsor will not buy a historic property near Jackson Park.
Mayor Drew Dilkens confirmed on Friday that the City had lost its bid to buy Windsor Stadium from the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB).
"In 2025, when the school board later declared the site surplus land, the City submitted an Expression of Interest to the Province to acquire this property," said Dilkens. "In January of this year, when the property was officially listed for sale on the open market, the City submitted a bid."
The City received a letter from the London-based law firm Harrison Pensa LLP earlier this month, informing the City that the school board rejected the bid.
The identity of the successful bidder has not been disclosed.
Windsor Stadium is in a prime location, adjacent to Jackson Park and to W.C. Kennedy Collegiate Institute, a fact that was not lost on the mayor.
"As I’ve expressed many times, I was in support of the City purchasing this land to add to Jackson Park, recognizing the importance of the property, its location adjacent to one of our signature parks, the potential of the footprint, and how it overlaps with many municipal, provincial, and national priorities, including housing," said Dilkens. "We wish the successful proponent all the best with their future plans for the site."
The venue has not recently had a regular tenant.
The GECDSB had also placed the former public elementary and high schools in Kingsville up for sale in January. The Town of Kingsville had bid to buy the former high school, but that was rejected.
