City of Windsor addressing invasive species in Malden Park

Work continues in Malden Park to manage the invasive species tree-of-heaven.

Visitors to the park may notice cut marks on around 50 trees. This step is known as girdling and is used at this time of year to inhibit the spread of seeds.

The City of Windsor said park staff will monitor the spread of tree-of-heaven over the growing season. It could take two to three years to be completely removed from the park.

However, the city said adult trees that have been treated could be left standing to provide habitat for wildlife. They will be removed if they pose a safety concern for visitors.

According to the City of Windsor, the trees do not pose a threat human health but they can be host to the spotted lanternfly that could be a threat to the local fruit and wine industry.

The City of Windsor hired a contractor in the fall to control other invasive species in the park, including phragmites and wild parsnip.
