Margaritas, cardio, and fun anticipated for this year's Cinco de Mayo

Who says you need to wait until May 5 to get the margaritas flowing?

As restaurants across the city gear up for next month's Cinco de Mayo festivities, The Maple City Mile Run Group and WindsorEats are planning to kick things off early with a "Margarita Mile."

On May 3, participants are invited to a 1,600-meter trek on city sidewalks around the WindsorEats Food Hall.

"We wanted to create an event where the only thing being taken seriously is the quality of the tequila," said Doug Robbins, also known as dougthefoodie, of Maple City Mile. "It's about community, a bit of cardio, and a lot of Cinco de Mayo spirit."

Cinco de Mayo, which is Spanish for "5th of May", is a day dedicated to honouring the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 while also celebrating Mexican culture and heritage.

Organizers said participants who cross the finish line will be awarded a Margarita Mile Demi-buff, a runner's buff "designed to be worn as a headband, neck gaiter, or a tactical napkin for post-race taco consumption."

Following the marathon, runners are invited to join the Cinco de Mayo party on the WindsorEats patio with margaritas and tacos available from local businesses.

Co-owner of WindsorEats, Adriano Ciotoli, said partnering with Doug is the perfect way to kick off Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

"We're all about creating experiences that you can't find anywhere else," said Ciotoli. "We'll have the margaritas flowing and the music pumping--the 'Mile' is just a warm-up for the party."
