Canada calls for investigation into the death of Windsor man in Southern Lebanon

Canada wants answers after a Windsor man died in an Israeli drone strike in Southern Lebanon earlier this month.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says officials from her office met with the Israeli ambassador last week.

"We were very adamant that this investigation is extremely important," said Anand. "It is of the utmost concern for me as Foreign Minister and for the Government of Canada whenever there is a killing of a Canadian on foreign soil for an investigation."

Mohamad Hassan Haidar's family says the 38-year-old died on April 10 on his horse farm. Days later, his family held a prayer vigil outside Windsor City Hall.

Anand took questions from reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday. She was asked if Israel committed to holding the investigation.

"We are very much hoping that they will respond positively to our request for a full and transparent investigation," she responded.

Haidar was born in Lebanon, but moved to Canada as a teen and settled in Windsor. He was married with five children.
