University honours educator outside Toldo Lancer Centre

The University of Windsor dedicated the walkway from College Avenue to the Toldo Lancer Centre to Dr. Richard Moriarty.

Moriarty was an educator, researcher, and champion of the university's athletic department.

He attended Assumption College in 1952 and became the athletic director of the University of Windsor in 1956. During his time as athletic director, the athletics department grew from five teams to 22 teams.

"Leader, educator, advocate, those are the three pillars you will see reflected in Moriarty Way and they are the three words that define a remarkable life of service," said Dean of the Faculty of Human Kinetics Linda Rohr.

Moriarty and his wife Mary co-founded the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association after the death of their daughter and worked to establish eating disorder awareness, prevention and treatment research in Canada.

Moriarty's children were on hand for the dedication of the walkway this week at the university. His daughter, Katie Moriarty said it means everything to their family that the university erected this in honour of her father.

“My father dedicated his life to making things better for others — for his students, his athletes, his colleagues and his community,” said Katie Moriarty. “Having this walkway named in his honour, at the place he loved so much, means everything to our family. It is a wonderful tribute to the man and the values he lived every day.”

Several signs have been put up along the walkway to highlight the many accomplishments of Moriarty's life.
