The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board has announced its new Director of Education will be John Ulicny.
Ulicny is currently the Executive Superintendent of Human Resources at the board, but he started his career with WECDSB 34 years ago as a teacher at St. Anne's Catholic High School.
He'll take over on August 1 when Emelda Byrne retires.
"As a senior member of our Catholic school board's administrative team, John has demonstrated that he's a highly accomplished and effective leader," said WECDSB Chair Lisa Souilliere, who made the announcement on Tuesday night. "His commitment to Catholic education is unwavering. He has a tremendous amount of experience, and we're confident that under his leadership our students, our staff, and our community will continue to benefit for many years to come."
Ulicny also taught at St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic Secondary School, where he also served as the vice principal from 2003 to 2007. After that, he moved to F.J. Brennan Catholic High School, and then he was appointed the principal at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School until 2010.
In 2010, Ulicny moved to the board's administrative office to assume the role of Superintendent of Human Resources. He moved into his executive position in 2021.
"I'm extremely grateful to be provided with the opportunity to lead our Catholic school board, and very thankful for the trustees and the confidence they have placed in me," said Ulicny. "Our school board has been on an upward trajectory for many years now. Our enrolment continues to grow. We are on solid financial footing, and we continue to introduce exciting new programs for our students."
