Health unit issues heat warning as temperatures soar

In addition to a yellow warning for heat from Environment Canada, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit has issued a heat warning.

The health unit issues a warning whenever we have at least two days in a row where the daytime high reaches 32 C or higher, overnight temperatures remain above 21 C, or the humidex reaches 42 C.

The daytime high on Wednesday is expected to reach 32 C with a humidex of 42 C.

The health unit said everyone is at risk from the heat, but older adults, young children, babies, those who work outside and those with certain medical conditions are especially vulnerable.

The warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion. Anyone suffering from those symptoms should seek medical help immediately. It urges residents to check on friends, family and neighbours during heat events.

As for beating the heat, the health unit recommends a cool shower or bath, limiting outdoor activities, and drinking plenty of water.

The heat warning is in effect at least until Thursday.
