Windsor's unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a percentage point in June, falling to 8 per cent.

Statistics Canada released its Labour Force Survey for June on Friday morning.

The city's labour force shrank by 1,000 people while the economy shed 400 jobs.

The labour participation rate went from 61.9 per cent to 61.6 per cent.

Across Canada, the economy added 18,000 net positions, pushing the employment rate up by a tenth of a percentage point to 60.8 per cent. The unemployment rate, in turn, dipped a tenth of a percentage point to 6.5 per cent in June, the second drop in two consecutive months.

Youth employment got the biggest boost with the addition of 33,000 positions. The jobless rate for workers aged 15 to 24 fell 0.7 per cent to 12.7 per cent. For those aged 25 to 54, 33,000 jobs were added, but for those over 55, the economy lost 47,000 positions.

Employment grew in accommodation and food services, but fell in manufacturing, agriculture, and utilities.

The percentage of those among the unemployed in May who found work in June is 24.3 per cent, and the layoff rate across Canada was 0.6 per cent, unchanged from a year ago.

Ontario's employment picture saw little change in June from May after adding 84,000 jobs the previous two months. The jobless rate provincially was 7 per cent.
