Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County have raised the alarm about a new scam making the rounds.
Police have taken complaints from people who have been contacted by scammers posing as employees from the major telecommunications companies, telling residents that they qualify for low-cost or free cell phone upgrades.
The potential victim is asked for some personal information and, believing the offer is legit, provides it.
Then, after a new cell phone is shipped, the scammer calls to say that a mistake has been made and the wrong device was sent. The victim, still believing they're dealing with a legitimate company, is directed to return the phone to an address provided by the scammer.
The victim will then likely be hit with the cost of the device, additional service charges, and any fraudulent activity on their account.
The OPP is urging residents not to provide any personal information to a caller unless they know who the caller is or they initiate the call. Consumers should also steer clear of unsolicited calls, emails, or text messages offering free or highly-discounted upgrades.
If you receive a call like this, the OPP suggests hanging up and calling your provider directly using the contact information provided on their official website or on your bill. Do not send any device back to any address without contacting your provider first for guidance.
