UPDATE: Windsor high school to reopen Wednesday after main break

Students at one Windsor public high school got an unexpected extension to their summer break on Tuesday.

The first day of fall classes at Vincent Massey Secondary School was cancelled due to a water main break outside the building.

"Essential services in the building were not functioning, requiring the school to unfortunately close for the day," read a Facebook post from the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB). "We began the morning hopeful that the issue could be resolved in time for regular classes to continue. However, we have since confirmed with ENWIN that repairs will not be completed in time for the school to reopen [Tuesday]."

As of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the board said that the break had been fixed, all proper water testing was completed, and classes will take place Wednesday.

"We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the community for their patience, understanding, and flexibility as we navigated this unexpected situation on the first day of school," read the later post from the board.

The laneway between Glenwood Public School and Vincent Massey will be open Wednesday.
