The school year is almost two weeks old, but Windsor police have tips for students who ride e-bikes to and from school.
Police say more students have been travelling to and from school on the bikes, but some may not be aware of the rules.
Ontario law requires e-bike users to be at least 16 years old. They must wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet. However, users are not required to carry a driver's licence, a vehicle ownership, or an insurance card.
E-bikes may only have a maximum 500-watt motor and a maximum speed of 32 kilometres per hour.
Users must follow the same rules of the road that apply to bicyclists, obeying all signals and signs.
E-bikes may not be ridden on sidewalks or roads where bicycles are not allowed, such as E.C. Row Expressway and Dougall Parkway between Roseland Drive East and the Sixth Concession.
"Vehicles that do not meet the definition of an e-bike may be subject to different licensing, registration and insurance requirements," read a social media post from Windsor police.
