A Kingsville couple was recently scammed out of $200,000.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the two responded to an internet ad that claimed to help invest money in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
They eventually became suspicious after being asked to invest more money. Soon after, they contacted local police.
The OPP are sharing this story as a reminder to the public that scams like this continue to exist.
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), around $351 million was defrauded from Canadians in 2025. It suggests that only five to 10 per cent of victims actually reach out to them or law enforcement.
There are several tips people can take to prevent falling victim to a scam. This includes refusing to give out personal information, rejecting friend requests from unknown people, avoiding investing money on unfamiliar platforms, and ignoring calls and text messages from unknown numbers.
