Lakeshore Fire opens its doors for Fire Prevention Week

The Lakeshore Fire Department is opening its doors this week to the public as it celebrates Fire Prevention Week.

All five fire halls will be open for tours on Thursday, October 8, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It's an opportunity to learn practical fire-prevention tips, meet local firefighters, and explore Lakeshore's fire trucks.

This year's Fire Prevention Week campaign is about safely using and charging lithium-ion battery-powered devices. It emphasizes how simple actions, including using an approved charger on a hard, flat surface, can prevent overheating, swelling, smoke, and unusual odours.

"Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on every day, which makes charging practices more important than ever," said Lakeshore Fire Chief Jason Suchiu.

"Fire Prevention Week is an important reminder that everyone has a role in keeping their home and family safe," added Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey. "During the week, Lakeshore firefighters will also visit 11 local elementary schools to teach students about fire safety, the importance of working smoke alarms, safe charging habits, and what to do in an emergency."

Fire Prevention Week Open Houses are planned at:

* Station 1 on County Road 22 in Emeryville

* Station 2 on Lakeshore Road 203 in Maidstone

* Station 3 on St. Charles Street in Belle River

* Station 4 on County Road 31 in Ruscom

* Station 5 on Main Street in Comber
