Windsor Regional Hospital introduces minimally-invasive prostate procedure

Men who are tackling prostate problems may now benefit from a new procedure offered at Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH).

The hospital has introduced the ThuLEP (Thulium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) procedure, designed for men who are affected by an enlarged gland.

The minimally invasive surgery is designed to help patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition among older males.

WRH Urologist Dr. Haider Abed said that the condition is more common than people think.

"If you think about it logically, every man with an enlarged prostate who is experiencing symptoms, such as a weak stream, waking up at night to pee, frequent voiding, or relying on a catheter they cannot get rid of, would qualify for this procedure," said Abed.

WRH is now one of only three hospitals in Ontario to offer the procedure.

The hospital expects to perform 50 ThuLEP procedures in the first year.
