Spits D-Man Nabs Major Award

Windsor Spitfires blue liner Mikhail Sergachev is the OHL's most outstanding defenceman for the 2015-16 season.

He was named the recipient of the annually awarded Max Kaminsky Trophy.

It was Sergachev's first season in the Ontario Hockey League where the 17-year-old from Nizhnekamsk, Russia scored 17 goals to lead the way among all defenceman in the league and adding 40 assists and a plus-15 rating in 67 games.

"This is so unexpected ," says Sergachev in a news release. "I'm truly honoured. I think there were many worthy candidates, including my defence partners, who could've easily been named. I'm grateful to all my teammates for their support and for helping me throughout the entire year to improve as a player and a person. I'm very thankful to the coaching staff and management for never stopping coaching me and always believing in me."

Sergachev is the number eight ranked North American skater heading into the NHL Draft in June.
