Pork Imports From America Up Last Year

Agriculture and Agri-food Canada reports a 2 per cent year-over-year increase in pork coming in from the U.S. last year.

The 205,000 tonnes of meat bought by Canada made us America's four biggest customer.

AAFC notes, while the export amount was up from 2015, the value of the pork was actually down by 2 per cent.

The agency also points out year-to-date slaughter south of the border is down by 1.9 per cent while total production has decreased by 2 full points.

Hog slaughter in Canada is down by about half a per cent so far this year.

Ontario slaughter, on the other hand, is up on the first six weeks of 2016 by 2.5 per cent.

Hog prices across the country were up an average of 5 per cent last week.

Prices here in the province are up by 5.3 per cent.

Jim Long of Swineweb.com notes April lean hog futures in the U.S. have increased by nearly 15 cents per pound over the last six months.

He says that swing in prices has hog farmers now making $15 per head, as opposed to losing $15 per animal last October.
