The carbon tax and trade were two points highlighted at the recent Federation of Agriculture Local Politician's Forum in Clinton.
Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb was at Friday's event and pointed out that farmers, like everyone else, pays the tax on the fuels they use.
“But the government is not giving them any credit for any of the other environmental benefits they provide on their farmlands, so in regards to a properly managed woodlot, there's no offset on a carbon tax with that,” said Lobb.
There is a private member's bill that proposes to give farmers a break by recognizing some of the environmentally friendly issues they do pursue.
As for trade, Lobb says Canada has to get a little tougher with some of its trading partners.
“We're getting pushed around, whether it's in China, or the United States and really with Mexico as well, because they didn't do us any favours in the new NAFTA 2.0 or USMCA, so we have to get a little tougher and we cannot be abused,” added Lobb.
Lobb says with the current administrations in Ottawa, China and the U-S, Canada is being treated like a door mat.
