Interest As Rail Deadline Approaches

There is renewed interest from companies considering using the former CSX line in north Chatham-Kent as a key deadline approaches.

Deputy Director of Economic Development Stuart McFadden says the interest in the line includes an Asian company.

"We still have people that are actively looking at it, we have four groups that are interested," he says. "Three of them specifically in transportation business and the other is a private investor that is looking at a business on the track."

When Chatham-Kent bought the line it sold the tracks to CP Rail for $3.2-million and up until March 2, the municipality can buy it back if it finds a company to operate the service. McFadden says that limits the municipal investment to $800,000.

After the deadline, a potential rail operator would have to negotiate for the track with CP.
