Coast Guard Watching Local Ice Conditions

Canadian Coast Guard crews are pleased they just have to deal with ice currently in the St. Clair River right now.

An ice bridge continues to block southern Lake Huron ice from entering the waterway.

But, Superintendent of Regional Operations Andy Maillet warns there is potential for a significant amount of ice to travel into the river this spring.

Maillet says we can only hope to have the same conditions this spring as we did locally last year.

He says warmer temperatures and winds pushed the ice into the centre of Lake Huron where it melted.

Maillet says the ice breaker Samuel Risley was slowly travelling northbound from Windsor Monday, escorting an oil tanker to Sarnia's refinery fuel docks.

He says in most areas of the river the ice is about two to three ft. thick.

But, Maillet says last week the Risley overturned some consolidated brash ice with an estimated thickness of over six ft.
