UAW Ratifies Deal With Fiat Chrysler

The United Auto Workers union says its members have ratified a new four-year agreement with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

The union posted the results of a vote on its website. It says 77% of production workers, 72% of skilled trades, and 87% of salaried workers voted in favour of the deal.

Back on October 9, union leadership approved an agreement that will gradually eliminate a two-tiered pay system. About 45% of Fiat Chrysler's hourly workers are lower-tiered workers.

The union agreed to lower wages for new hires in 2007, a few years before Chrysler fell into bankruptcy protection. When the company's current CEO, Sergio Marchionne took over, he called the system "unsustainable".

The latest deal was reached three days after the union issued Fiat Chrysler a strike notice.
