Chatham-Kent OPP have laid charges against several drivers in connection with a five-vehicle pile up on the Hwy. 401 Thursday afternoon.
Police say the chain reaction crash took place at around 3:45pm Thursday in a construction zone in the eastbound lanes of the highway.
The investigation shows that the crash started when a transport truck crashed into the back of another tractor trailer that had stopped because of slow moving traffic. That crash pushed the second tractor trailer into the back of a third transport truck further up the line. Police say after that, two more motor vehicles crashed into the truck at the back of the line.
All five of the vehicles that were involved had to be towed from the scene, but only minor injuries were reported.
As a result of their investigation, police have charged the 51-year-old male driver of the transport truck that initiated the crash with careless driving.
A 69-year-old man from Windsor and a 35-year-old man from St. Thomas are also charged in connection with the crash -- they're accused of following too closely.
Officers say a fourth driver is charged in connection with an incident that took place while crews were cleaning up the scene.
Police say an eastbound transport truck that was approaching the crash site attempted to use the centre median to turn around and ended up getting stuck.
A 25-year-old man from Scarborough is now charged with careless driving.
