Student vote varies from actual results in CK

The newly elected Chatham-Kent Council would look a little bit different if local high school and elementary students had a say in the election process.

Students across the province recently held a mock vote as part of the Student Vote Program and while there was no change in the mayor's race in CK, the local results ended up with some noticeable differences when it came to which candidates were voted in as councillors.

In Chatham-Kent, 18 schools took part and 12 schools had reported their results as of Tuesday morning.

Mayor-elect Darrin Canniff was in the top spot with 404 votes, outgoing mayor Randy Hope was a close second (391 votes), and Alysson Storey was third (253 votes). They were followed by Harold Atkinson, Robert Salvatore Powers, and Allan Robert Traylor (in that order).

When it came to the ward results, students voted in seven candidates who were unsuccessful Monday night (Jordan Dell, Tanya Bondy, Frank Vercouteren, Jessica Brooks, Don Fuoco, Kirk Hooker, and Don "Sparky" Leonard).

Of the municipal councillors who were elected during the mock exercise, retired police officer Amy Finn received the most votes (313), followed by Don "Sparky" Leonard (261), and Michael Bondy (241).
