New lights coming to EMS vehicles in CK

Drivers in Chatham-Kent can expect to see something different next time an ambulance is coming up behind them.

Chatham-Kent EMS will start adding blue lights to their fleet of vehicles.

Last year, the Ministry of Transporation made changes to the Highway Traffic Act that would allow fire and paramedic vehicles in Ontario to start using blue lights on their emergency vehicles in addition to their red and white flashing lights. Previously, police vehicles were the only emergency vehicles allowed to use blue lights.

According to Donald MacLellan, general manager of Chatham-Kent EMS/Medavie EMS, blue lights are easier seen by the human eye, especially at night.

“Research has proven that the blue lights are a light that can grab a motorist’s attention a lot easier,” he explained. “It allows for a better contrast compared to the taillights of vehicles.”

According to MacLellan, red and white lights alone had been standard for a significant amount of time. He believes the new lights will provide a safer environment for both the public and the paramedics.

“Having motorists see us a lot easier with the visibility of the lights allows them to prepare for us coming upon them in emergency mode,” he said. “Then, for example, when we’re on the side of the road dealing with a call for service, motorists will visibly see we’re stopped.”

MacLellan said the blue lights are being installed on three new ambulances coming into service shortly. After that, blue emergency lights will become an equipment standard on all new vehicles acquired by the paramedic service.
